Mozambique Early Grade Reading Project (APaL)

USAID, in collaboration with the Mozambique Ministry of Education and Human Development (MINEDH), implemented the Aprender a Ler (APaL) Project to improve early grade reading in Mozambique.  Contracted for the multi-year impact evaluation of APal, IBTCI conducted qualitative and quantitative analysis of data on second and third grade students and their schools in 180 schools located in the economic corridors of Nampula and Zambézia Provinces. IBTCI, with its Mozambican partner GSC Research, additionally developed a methodology for the assignment of schools in these areas to receive either a “Full” treatment advocating for increased training and assistance to both teachers and school directors, “Medium” treatment advocating for increased training and assistance to only teachers, or no-treatment “Control” schools.
